The Great Debaters, a 2007 film produced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, is a drama based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, professor at Wiley College, a Black college in the Jim Crow South of the 1930s, who demands the highest standards from his debate team, victorious in the end over national debating champions from Harvard.
Following the movie, there will be a brief discussion and a short business meeting, and a reception for the students (with free popcorn, appetizers and beverages provided)
