Juneteenth Celebration on 6/14 in Albany

The City of Albany 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration will be held at the Arbor Hill Community Center, 10-2pm on Saturday, June 14th, 2008.  There will be workshops, Essay & Poster Contest Winners announced, Juneteenth Talent Show, and lots of fun and free food.

New Superintendent of NYS Police Sworn in by the Hon. Helena Heath-Roland

Congratulations to CDBHBA Board Member and City Court Judge Helena Heath-Rowland who had the honor of swearing in Harry J. Corbitt as New York’s first African American Superintendent of the NYS Police while NY’s first African American Governor, David Paterson, who appointed Corbitt to the Superintendent’s position, looks on.  Read the full article here.

Albany Law School’s 157th commencement ceremony took place at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Friday, May 16, 2008.

 as we celebrate the last day of law school exams with a special FREE viewing of The Great Debaters, starring Denzel Washington.

The Great Debaters, a 2007 film produced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, is a drama based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, professor at Wiley College, a Black college in the Jim Crow South of the 1930s, who demands the highest standards from his debate team, victorious in the end over national debating champions from Harvard.

 

Following the movie, there will be a brief discussion and a short business meeting, and a reception for the students (with free popcorn, appetizers and beverages provided)

Albany Law Hosts Youth Law Day

Ninth -twelfth graders from Trinity Institute, Albany, Schenectady, Troy and Hudson High Schools spent the day at Albany Law School on Monday, April 21, 2008. 

Students attended mock college classes, mock law classes, a seminar on preparing for college, learned about the law school admissions process, and explored their career possibilities in the field of law.

Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares ‘99 spent lunchtime with the  100+ students and Attorney Kenneth Standard, Partner, Epstein Becker & Green, NYC , hosted the day.

The day aligned with Albany Law School’s “pipeline” efforts to introduce the prospect of law school at an early age to populations underrepresented as lawyers.

This event was sponsored by the New York State Bar Association and Albany Law School .

Career Day at Albany Law School

The Black Law Students Association, the Latin American Law Students Association, the Capital District Black & Hispanic Bar Assocation, and Albany Law School’s Diversity Office hosted a Career Panel on April 10, 2008 in the DAMC at 6:00pm.  A reception followed in the East Foyer at 7:30pm.  The panelists included:
